Ol' Curmudgeon. Get another carb? Check for vacuum leaks first, maybe? Wilson Well-Known Member. CHukkawala said:. This is for a race motor Well I have a main jet. Should I try a jet??? Or should I mess with the Air correction jet? And how do you know when its correct. When you don't put a hole in the 3 piston you can stick your finger through. A simple way to check for vacuum leaks is to start the motor, let it idle, and then spray carb cleaner or starting fluid around the carb, manifold bellows and end castings, if you still think you might have a vacuum leak, you should do a leak down test.
Turning the screw in will reduce the idle, while backing it out will raise the idle. View Menu. S News. Bentley VW repair manuals are hard to beat on this front. Remove your air cleaner. Disconnect your throttle linkage by loosening the set screw on the barrel nut on your carburetor's throttle arm. Save the barrel nut for you new carburetor. Remove your fuel line. We suggest leaving a rag beneath it to catch any fuel draining out.
You may need to clamp it shut if you have a buggy with a fuel tank above the engine. Remove any vacuum lines attached to the carburetor. We suggest taking a photo of them before removal to ease installation of your new carburetor.
One will be right in front the other will be harder to access between the manifold and the fan shroud. Once the carburetor is removed, clean the intake manifold flange of any old gasket material or debris. Install the two new studs in the base of the carburetor making sure that the longer section of threads is facing down and will pass through the intake manifold flange. Install the gasket on the base of the carburetor by sliding it on the studs. The best way to identify what Carburetor you need is to find the model number stamped on the side of carburetor float bowl on your current Carburetor.
If you're not sure what Carburetor you require the next step would be to identify if you have a Single Port or Dual Port Engine. Please keep in mind this information is for stock engines only. We have no way of knowing what is on your car if it has been modified. It is very important to know the difference between single port and dual port intake manifolds. Although all Volkswagen engines using carburetors through came with Single Port Engines and Carburetorsmany have changed to dual port engines and intake manifolds.
Check the Manifold. If it is one solid continuous unit from carburetor to heads, you have a single port carburetor and Single port long block engine. Single port intake is bolted to heads using 10mm nuts on 6mm studs. The easiest way to tell the difference between the single and dual port intake is that on Dual Port Intake Manifoldsthere are either black or orange sleeves on either side of the intake manifold between the carburetor and the cylinder head.
Dual port intake is bolted down using 13 mm nuts on 8mm studs. If your engine has this, your engine despite the year of the car has a dual port intake manifold and would use the 34PICT VW carburetor, also known as the "dual port carburetor". All rights reserved. If that is not enough; jets, gaskets, and rebuild kits are readily available. When determining what carburetor model you need always check the engine serial number, carburetor model number and your intake manifold type. A further explanation of this is listed below. Those carburettors use a different adjustment technique altogether. For those you must use the other tune up procedure on this site. Note: Before you begin to adjust the carburetor, the valves, points, and timing should be set.
This is important, and they should be set in the order given below -- start with the engine cold, and finish with it warm. These topics are addressed in the following. Note: See our procedure for adjusting the valves.
The engine must be completely cold to set the valves. Some folks find that results in the valves being too tight when the engine warms up, and use 0. Note: and up engines use 0.
The aim of the tappet setting is to provide virtually no gap when the engine is at operating temperature. Note: See our procedure for setting the points. Now set the points at 0. If they are pitted or damaged, or if the rubbing block is badly worn, replace them. Put a small dab of grease on the cam lobes whilst you are at it.
Also pull off the rotor arm and have a look at the spindle it sits on. If there is a felt pad in there some have it, some don'tput a few drops of oil engine oil is fine on the pad to help lubricate the distributor.
Don't overdo it - just a few drops. Setting the Timing. Note: See our procedure for setting the timing.
EMPI 34 Pict Carburetor Installation Instructions
The usual timing is as follows:. This is set with the engine off static timing. In the USA, the engines used O degrees advance - TDC, with the single vacuum single advance distributor, as an early emissions control measure.
This is set with the engine idling, so that the retard vacuum line is operating. It is conceivable to use a double vacuum distributor with the retard vacuum line disabled, then using the 7. It is important to set the at the maximum advance point - the total advance varies on them, and the maximum advance is more important than the idle, which usually ends up somewhere in the BTDC range.
EMPI VW Carburetors, Kits and Components
It is very common to see the distributor being used as a replacement for the original vacuum distributors which can be hard to findbut you should note that the was originally designed to work with industrial VW engines running compressors, generators and the like, which were relatively constant speed engines.
They were not developed for road going engines with their constant changes in load and rpm, and they were never used on beetles by VW.Last Updated: June 4, References. To create this article, 15 people, some anonymous, worked to edit and improve it over time.

Find the automatic choke. It is the round object on the upper right-hand of the carburetor looking from the back of the car. There is a wire coming to it from the positive side of the coil. Check this with a trouble light for voltage when the key is on. The choke is held in position by a triangular ring clamp and three screws so it can be loosened and rotated for adjustment.
Pull the throttle arm on the left side of the carburetor down to free the cam little step arm that the screw at the top of the throttle lever rests on. As the engine warms up, the coil voltage heats an element inside the automatic choke, causing a bi-metal spring to uncoil, opening the butterfly valve, and moves the cam to reduce the idle speed.
Release the throttle arm so that the return spring snaps it back. This sets the hi-idle, which is needed together with the choke on a cold engine to provide sufficient idle speed to keep the engine running until it warms up fully.
When cold loosen not remove the three screws on the right side that hold the choke in place. Keep your eye on the butterfly valve in the carburetor throat. Then turn the choke counterclockwise until the choke butterfly fully closes not too tight.A detailed question: I have a Type 2 Bus, with a cc single-port engine.

Would those cuts rebalance the market at some point next year. Even if they start the year with sticking to cuts, would some OPEC and non-OPEC producers start cheating and renege on pledges once they see more revenues at higher oil prices and be tempted to get more revenue.
How would this affect global supply and oil prices. How would OPEC react to the U. Next PostOilfield Services To See Spending Surge In 2017 Tsvetana is a writer for the U. How many would be needed to be added back to increase production commensurate with OPEC cuts. How much capex would it take reactivate over 1000 rigs. Can the shale producers really increase production to an extent to obviate the OPEC cut when LESS capex is being spent. How long will it take to gets those new rigs up and running and producing.
Phil Currie on December 23 2016 said: Craig Ferrell is correct. One more thing to add to his comments. Where will all the people come from to run these rigs to bring back this oil production. Many have left the industry, some will flock back, but not all. I do not see the rig count in the US going over 1000 for a very long time, if ever again.
The pundit class never seems to be interested in talking about how accurate they have been, and that's not aimed at you personally Ms. Craig Ferrell on December 23 2016 said: Thanks Phil. Couldn't fit in previous comment field the aspect of financing. Banks review borrowing base twice a year, and cut back last fall based on lower prices. By the time they re-evaluate in spring with higher bases and presumably more ability to spend on capex, the 1st round of OPEC cuts will already be in the books.
It will take a bit longer than assumed, and thus higher oil prices. James kaiser on December 23 2016 said: I agree with Craig and Phil. The big thing Oil Shale requires is CAPEX.
You have to spend big money to make big money. They either have to make the money or borrow it. They can't produce enough to drill, and banks aren't going to lend them money OR they're already extended their credit to the limit.
Also, companies are inherently conservative. The industry might be short sited at times, but it's still runs to make a profit, and until there's enough revenue and cash flow coming back OUT of oil shales, banks and company executives will hesitate to or won't be able to spend like it's 2014. As in the past the abusers will go all the way. Alex on December 29 2016 said: I would not rely too much on rig count considering new technology of horizontal drilling. Plus, there are a lot of wells that have been drilled, and now require frac jobs with lower than drilling costs.
